YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Understanding PVC wall cladding.

PVC wall cladding covers several different product categories, from rigid hygienic sheets used in commercial buildings to decorative panels intended for selected domestic interiors. Although these products share the same broad material family, their construction, installation methods and intended applications may be different.

This FAQ focuses primarily on rigid PVC wall sheets, including products commonly used in hygienic wall cladding. We explain general material characteristics, highlight important limitations and identify where a manufacturer's instructions should take priority.

Always check the actual product specification, substrate and environment before purchasing. Fire performance, waterproofing, adhesives and hygienic installation requirements cannot be determined from the term "PVC cladding" alone.

01 / PRODUCTS

PVC sheets, sizes and thickness.

What is PVC wall cladding?

PVC wall cladding is a wall covering made using polyvinyl chloride. Rigid PVC sheets are commonly selected to provide smooth, cleanable surfaces in suitable commercial and hygienic interiors. Decorative PVC panels are a separate product category with potentially different fitting and performance characteristics.

Read the Introduction ↗

What thickness does PVC wall cladding come in?

Common rigid PVC sheet thicknesses include 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm. Thicker boards and other specialist products are also available. Choosing the correct thickness depends on the intended application, fixing system, expected impacts and technical requirements.

Thickness Guide ↗

What sizes are PVC cladding sheets?

Common rigid sheet dimensions include 2440 × 1220mm and 3050 × 1220mm. These sizes cover approximately 2.98m² and 3.72m² respectively, before considering cutting losses. Other dimensions are available depending on the product range.

Sheet Size Guide ↗

Is white PVC better than coloured PVC?

Colour alone does not determine material suitability. White PVC is common in hygienic commercial interiors, but coloured products can provide additional design options. Compare the products' actual specifications, including thickness, cleaning guidance and fire-performance information.

02 / INSTALLATION

Fitting, adhesives and profiles.

How do you install rigid PVC wall cladding?

A typical installation begins with checking and preparing the supporting wall, measuring and cutting sheets, and planning the joining and corner details. The sheets are then fixed using the approved method and the joints and edges are finished to the manufacturer's specification.

Step-by-Step Installation ↗

Can PVC cladding be fitted over existing tiles?

Some systems permit installation over existing tiles if they are sound, stable and suitably prepared. The adhesive must be compatible with the tiled surface, and any existing moisture issues must be addressed before fitting new cladding.

Installation Considerations ↗

What adhesive should be used for PVC sheets?

Polyurethane and MS polymer adhesives are used with some rigid PVC cladding products. However, different adhesives have different substrate, coverage and curing requirements. Select only an adhesive approved for the specific sheet system.

Adhesive Selection Guide ↗

What are H, J and F cladding profiles?

H profiles are commonly used between adjoining sheets. J profiles can be used for exposed edges, while F profiles serve particular finishing and transition arrangements. Their shapes and intended uses vary, so check compatibility with the sheet thickness.

03 / MOISTURE

Waterproofing, cleaning and maintenance.

Is PVC wall cladding waterproof?

PVC itself resists water absorption, but a completed wall installation is not automatically waterproof. Water can enter through incorrectly finished joints, gaps, corners and penetrations. Directly wetted areas may require an approved waterproof system behind the finish.

Bathroom & Wet Area Guide ↗

Can hygienic PVC sheets be installed in a shower?

Only where the manufacturer approves the specific product and installation system for direct shower exposure. Commercial hygienic sheets should not automatically be treated as interchangeable with purpose-designed shower wall panel systems.

Shower Installation Advice ↗

How do you clean PVC wall cladding?

Suitable PVC cladding surfaces can generally be cleaned with compatible products and non-abrasive equipment. Check the manufacturer's guidance before using disinfectants or stronger chemicals. Inspect seals and joints as part of routine care.

Hygienic Cladding & Cleaning ↗

Does PVC cladding prevent mould?

A smooth, cleanable finish may make surface maintenance easier, but cladding does not prevent all mould problems. Condensation, poor ventilation, damaged seals and underlying dampness can still cause difficulties. Moisture issues should be investigated rather than simply covered over.

04 / SAFETY & HYGIENE

Fire safety and commercial applications.

Is PVC wall cladding fire-resistant?

PVC products can have different reaction-to-fire classifications. Performance depends on formulation, product design and potentially the tested mounting conditions. Do not assume a sheet meets a particular requirement without reviewing its relevant documentation.

Product Selection Advice ↗

Can PVC be used behind cooking equipment?

PVC has temperature limitations and may be unsuitable where substantial heat exposure occurs. Areas around commercial cooking appliances need appropriate wall construction and material specification. Stainless steel is often considered in suitable heat-exposed applications.

Kitchen Wall Cladding Guide ↗

Is PVC cladding suitable for food preparation rooms?

Appropriate hygienic PVC systems can be used in selected food handling environments. The completed wall surface must support effective cleaning and meet the applicable food hygiene requirements. Product selection alone does not establish regulatory compliance.

Food Preparation Guide ↗

Does antimicrobial PVC eliminate the need for cleaning?

No. Antimicrobial product claims depend on the manufacturer's substantiated testing and intended conditions of use. Such materials do not replace an appropriate cleaning and disinfection programme or correct hygienic installation.

05 / BUYING

Prices, delivery and suppliers.

How much does PVC wall cladding cost per m²?

Calculate the material cost per square metre by dividing the sheet price by its area. For example, a sheet priced at £50 and measuring 2440 × 1220mm costs approximately £16.80 per m². This is an illustrative example, not a current supplier quotation.

Pricing & Cost Guide ↗

How many sheets do I need?

Measure each wall, calculate the total area and compare it with the area covered by your chosen sheets. Plan the actual cutting layout, allowing for corners, openings, offcuts and appropriate waste. Simply dividing areas may not produce a practical sheet count.

Project Budget Planning ↗

Why do delivery charges vary?

Rigid PVC sheets are large items and can need suitable transport and handling. Sheet dimensions, order volume, delivery location and selected service can influence the charge. Compare the complete delivered basket cost between suppliers.

Delivery Cost Advice ↗

Where can I buy PVC cladding in the UK?

UK suppliers include businesses specialising in hygienic PVC wall sheets and those offering value-focused white PVC products. Compare dimensions, technical documentation, compatible accessories, delivery and current purchasing terms.

06 / MATERIAL CHOICES

PVC versus other wall finishes.

Is PVC cladding better than ceramic tiles?

Neither is universally better. Large PVC sheets may create fewer visible joints and offer a straightforward cleanable finish. Tiles offer different design and finish options. Suitability depends on the environment, waterproofing, cleaning and installation requirements.

PVC and Tiles Comparison ↗

Is PVC or stainless steel better for kitchens?

Suitable hygienic PVC can be considered for selected preparation areas, while stainless steel is often preferable in locations where higher heat resistance is needed. The material should be matched to each working zone and the complete installation.

PVC vs Stainless Steel Guide ↗

What is the difference between PVC sheets and shower panels?

Commercial rigid PVC sheets and decorative shower panels can differ in construction, joining methods, thickness and intended use. A product described as PVC should not automatically be considered a complete waterproof shower system.

Bathroom Panel Advice ↗

Can different cladding materials be used in one room?

Yes, when properly specified. A commercial kitchen might use hygienic PVC in one area and stainless steel elsewhere, according to heat, cleaning and operational requirements. Connections between different materials should be appropriately detailed.
