MATERIAL COMPARISON / WALL FINISHES

PVC Wall Cladding vs Tiles.

Two established wall covering options. Different installation methods, maintenance needs and design possibilities.

Choosing between PVC wall cladding and ceramic tiles depends on where the material will be used, how frequently it will be cleaned and the appearance you want to achieve. This guide compares the advantages, limitations and long-term considerations of both.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES

Which wall covering should you choose?

PVC wall cladding and ceramic tiles are both used in domestic and commercial interiors. Each can provide a practical wall finish, but their strengths depend on the surrounding environment and the installation system.

Rigid PVC cladding sheets are commonly used in hygienic wall applications where large areas need a smooth, cleanable covering. Sheet formats can reduce the number of joints across a wall compared with conventional small-format tiling.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles offer a wide choice of sizes, patterns, textures and finishes. They also have different temperature and wear characteristics from PVC, making suitable tiles useful in applications where their properties are preferred.

Neither material makes a wall automatically waterproof or compliant with a particular building requirement. The supporting substrate, adhesive, joints and other installation details must all be appropriate for the intended use.

THE TWO OPTIONS

Understanding the materials.

01 / PVC
PVC

Rigid PVC Wall Cladding Sheets

Rigid PVC sheets are used to create smooth wall surfaces across large areas. In suitable installations they can offer cleanability, relatively straightforward maintenance and fewer visible joints than small-format tiles.

Common sheet thicknesses include 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm, although product specifications differ. Hygienic PVC is often selected for commercial interiors, food preparation rooms and other environments where washable finishes are desirable.

The correct sheet formulation, fixing adhesive, trims and sealing method need to be selected for each application. PVC has temperature limitations and is not automatically a suitable direct-wet shower wall system.

Key consideration Large sheets can reduce visible jointing, but proper joining and edge detailing remain essential.

TILE

Ceramic & Porcelain Wall Tiles

Ceramic and porcelain tiles provide a wide range of decorative options, including different sizes, colours and surface textures. They can be appropriate for bathrooms, kitchens and other interiors when correctly specified and installed.

Tile installations normally involve multiple units fixed to a suitable substrate, with joints filled using compatible grout. The type of tile, adhesive, grout and backing system should suit the intended exposure.

Individual damaged tiles may be repairable, although matching replacements can be difficult if the original design is no longer available. Grout and movement joints also require appropriate care.

Key consideration Tile systems offer considerable design flexibility, but grout lines and waterproofing details need to be maintained.

CLEANING & HYGIENE

Which is easier to keep clean?

A major difference between PVC sheet cladding and tiled walls is the number and type of joints. Large-format rigid PVC sheets can provide broad uninterrupted areas of cleanable surface, with fewer joins than a wall covered in smaller tiles.

Traditional tiling creates grout lines between individual units. These joints may need additional attention when cleaning, especially in food preparation rooms or heavily used washrooms. The grout type and maintenance regime will influence how easily the installation can be kept clean.

PVC is not maintenance-free. Profiles, sealants, corners and wall penetrations require cleaning and regular inspection. Cleaning products must also be compatible with the chosen PVC formulation and finish.

For hygiene-sensitive premises, a smooth, suitably specified wall covering and correctly finished joints can support effective cleaning. The full installation and workplace cleaning regime determine its practical suitability.

CLEANING COMPARISON
01
Number of joints

Large PVC sheets often create fewer joints than small tiles.

02
Grout maintenance

Tile grout requires cleaning and possible future repair.

03
Cleaning chemicals

Both systems need products suitable for their surfaces and jointing materials.

04
Surface damage

Cracks, gaps and failed seals can undermine cleanability.

Ease of cleaning is influenced by surface finish, joint design and maintenance procedures.

WATER & MOISTURE

Are PVC cladding and tiles waterproof?

Water resistance at the material surface is different from waterproofing the complete wall.

01 / PVC WALL SHEETS

Moisture-Resistant Material

PVC itself resists water absorption. However, a wall clad with rigid PVC sheets is not automatically waterproof. Water may pass through incorrectly finished joints, corners, edges or penetrations.

In directly wetted locations, use a system specifically approved for that exposure, together with any necessary waterproofing beneath the finished surface.

02 / CERAMIC & PORCELAIN

Water-Resistant Tile Finish

Many glazed ceramic and porcelain tile surfaces provide good resistance to water. However, grout joints and the underlying construction can permit moisture movement if the system is not correctly designed.

Showers and other wet areas may require an appropriate tanking or waterproofing system behind the tiles, together with suitable movement joints and seals.

Important for bathrooms and showers: Neither generic PVC sheeting nor conventional tiles should be assumed to replace a correctly specified waterproofing system.

LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE

Durability, repairs and maintenance.

01

Impacts

Both systems can be damaged. PVC impact performance depends on sheet thickness, formulation and backing, while tiles may chip or crack under impact.

02

Scratches & Wear

PVC surfaces may become scratched. Suitable tiles can offer hard, wear-resistant surfaces, although finish and product quality affect performance.

03

Joint Maintenance

PVC installations may need inspection of joining profiles and sealants. Tiled walls require care of grout and movement joints.

04

Repairs

A damaged tile can sometimes be replaced individually. Rigid PVC repairs depend on the system and may involve replacing a larger sheet.

CHOOSING BY LOCATION

Which is better for your project?

The best wall covering depends on how the space is used and which properties matter most.

01 / FOOD PREPARATION

Commercial Food Preparation Areas

Appropriate hygienic PVC sheets can offer a cleanable surface with relatively few joints. Suitable tiles are also used in food premises, but the condition and cleanability of grout must be considered.

MATERIAL & INSTALLATION COSTS

Is PVC cladding cheaper than tiles?

PVC sheets may offer a cost advantage over some tiled installations, particularly where large areas can be covered efficiently. However, this is not guaranteed. Product quality, labour, preparation and installation details all affect the total.

A PVC installation budget should include sheets, compatible adhesives, joining profiles, corners, delivery and fitting. Substrate repairs and specialist finishing may create additional costs.

A tiled installation needs a budget for the tiles themselves, tile adhesive, grout, spacers, trims, waterproofing where required, cutting waste and labour.

Compare both options on a complete installed cost basis. Maintenance and future repairs should also form part of the purchasing decision.

MAKING THE DECISION

Choose the wall finish that fits the job.

Consider rigid PVC cladding when an approved large-format sheet system provides the required cleanable finish and the operating conditions are suitable for PVC.

Consider ceramic or porcelain tiles where their design flexibility, surface properties or other performance characteristics are preferred, provided the complete tile system meets the application requirements.

In commercial environments, particularly near significant heat sources, assess whether stainless steel or another suitable wall system is needed instead of either option.
